Cok Astiti
Born: 1948, Indonesia
Cok Astiti was born into an aristocratic family, who were able to accept that their daughter wished to become an artist. She studied Fine Art at Udayana University in Denpasar, where she is now a lecturer. Apart from her professional obligations, she also must find time to care for her five
children and to do all the religious and social obligations necessary for a person of her class. Finding time to paint can be hard, but she has always persevered.
Cok Astiti has participated in exhibitions since 1971, frequently at the Art Centre in Denpasar, and also in Jakarta, in a number of different locales. In her work, Cok Astiti focuses on the lives and feelings of women, normally Balinese women, and their cares and responsibilities, particularly for their children, but also their other roles in life, such as dancers, teachers and providers of sustenance. In 1995, she was one of three women artists invited to spend ten weeks in Cologne, Germany, learning about European artistic traditions and developments in modern art.
In 2000, Cok Astiti was one of the very first Indonesian students to be invited to participate in an Artist in Residence programme at Red Mill, Vermont, and in 2004 she graduated as a Master of Science from Udayana University.
