Lahendra Gallery
Born: 1956
Education:
1978 - 1981: IKIP Seni Rupa Yogyakarta
His Works:
Lahendra paints an interesting mix of mockery and humour.
Lahendra’s works usually looks like a big piece of paper collage on canvas. But unknown to many, his paintings contain iconographies familiar to the Javanese people. For example, his paintings would always have black circles in the background. These circles represent ‘tunnels’ or passageways where it is open and enables anything and anyone to enter. He feels Mans’ ideal character is his open mindedness and acceptance. Like the passageways, which allow any substance to enter, so should Man be open minded towards different perspectives henceforth allowing change to happen. Lahendra feels that this philosophical concept is what describes the Indonesian people best.
Some of Lahendra’s paintings are more valuable than the others because of the postage stamp, now no longer in production, which he used to mark his paintings. The stamp is a picture of the Garuda Pancasila.
