Godod Gallery

Born: 1953, Indonesia

He is from the Wonogiri region in Central Java which is an area of limestone hills and of poor agricultural communities. People of Wonogiri are relatively famous for having a culturally flexible attitude towards problems of daily life.

He was brought up in the Javanese traditional community which was plain, simple and quiet, far from the complexities of technology and urban life. Hence Godod is very familiar with Javanese spiritualism and esoteric matters. This has a lot of influence on how he sees the world and his preference to create his art.

About his works:
Godod uses the power of his soul to connect with the subtlest aesthetic vibrations and integrates them with his fantasies, spiritual experience and his experience of bygone environments. This is what makes his paintings feel unique as they have a very mysterious character and a magical content.

Godod’s paintings have always appeared unique since the 70’s; in his depiction of various human activities amidst the calm, peaceful, tranquil but never lonely nature. Looking from a bird’s eye view, he observes human activities in the various simple natural and cultural environments with warmth to life. Although he depicts mankind in the middle of nature, he has a unique point of view on the relationship of human life with nature. In Godod’s paintings, nature means open nature which helps man carry out his activities.

Godod does not see paintings as merely being decorative or pursues art for art’s sake but he uses them to express his dreams and aspirations that come from his mind and conscience. Although in his works nature is always calm and compromising, at the present time, it is experiencing a time of uncertainty, violence and an imbalance, which is affecting every aspect of human daily life. One must have a strategy to stay cool and rational in these difficult times. For this reason, Godod thinks of peaceful and comforting things and paints it even though he is aware of what is happening around him. He tries to put forth calming and homely symbols.

Most importantly, he merely wants to make a small contribution with his artistic values and atmosphere in which he consciously depicts humans living harmoniously with others as well as with nature that provides life.
