Gabriel Aakeklou Gallery
Born: 1966, Ghana
About his works:
Gabriel Aakeklou is an amazing and prolific self-taught painter. His distinctive style has attracted and baffled art-lovers worldwide. His elongated figures are always there and their roots, perceived as stilts go down deep into the earth. Gabriel prefers earth colours and his paintings are restful to look at even if they agitate the mind. Characterized by subdivided fields with diverse shades of pastels alongside muted colours that appear secondary to his compositions. His cultural symbols, which are often in dark colours are arbitrarily delineated and demarcated. Perhaps, his most significant trademark is the ubiquitous presence of stilt figures with extenuated limbs and loose amorphous forms indeed, their high waists, distended beliefs, tapering hands and legs all recall images of Ghanaian folklore.
